Konark (or Konarak) is a small town in Puri district in the Indian state of Odisha. Located near the Bay of Bengal, 65 kilometers from Bhubaneswar, the state capital, Konark is best known as the site of the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple, a World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Odisha. The temple takes the form of the chariot of Surya (Arka), the sun god, and is decorated with exquisite stone carvings.


The Konark temple presents this iconography on a grand scale. It has 24 elaborately carved stone wheels which are nearly 12 feet (3.7 m) in diameter and are pulled by a set of seven horses. When viewed from inland during the dawn and sunrise, the chariot-shaped temple appears to emerge from the depths of the blue sea carrying the sun.The Konark Sun Temple complex has ruins of many subsidiary shrines and monuments around the main temple. Some of these include Mayadevi Temple, Vaishnava Temple,  Kitchen, Well 1, and Well 2.The east-west sides of the temple capture the sun rays at sunrise, noon, and sunset is worth watching.

Konark hosts an annual dance festival, held every December, devoted to classical Indian dance forms, including the traditional classical dance of Odisha, odissi. Konark beach is a popular tourist destination.

The stone slabs of the temple are perfectly proportioned structure is accentuated with great chiseled motifs of flowers, birds, animals, royals, and deities. There are some erotic structures on the temple. It is believed that the base of the temple contains some 2000 images of elephants.

Besides Konark, there is also another sun temple in Orissa called Biranchi khetra (Biranchi Narayan Temple) in Buguda, Ganjam District, Odisha. 

Bhubaneswar airport is the nearest airport located at a distance of 64 km away from Konark. Bhubaneshwar is linked by frequent flights to numerous major cities India including Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad. From the airport, tourists can avail of transport facilities to reach Konark.

Puri, located at a distance of 31 km is the closest railway station to Konark. Puri is linked to all main cities in India. Pre-paid taxis and various other modes of transport facilities are available from the railway station to Konark. 0

Konark is well-connected to other cities through the Odisha State Public Transport buses. Private bus services are also available from Bhubaneshwar (66 km), and other cities in Odisha.
